    CREDIBILITY INTERVIEWS

The credibility interview is called Kira and is automated. Not all students will be asked to do one but it is likely most from India will be asked.

Sally Fairburn sent the following message on Kira interviews February 23:

I wanted to reach out to you to provide you with an update on our intention to study interviews, known to you as KIRA. Having taken onboard stakeholder feedback, we have reduced the number of questions from 12 to 8 ( plus an ID verification question). Hopefully, you will agree this is a positive step in the applicant experience. While we have reduced the number of questions, we have also created pools of questions in certain areas to ensure applicants can confidently answer any questions put forward to them by the UKVI.

    The questions will cover.

    • Why the UK
    • Why USW
    • The qualifications/course/assessment methods
    • Course facilities
    • Course assessment
    • Course details
    • Future plans
    • Living in the UK

Some of these questions are pass/fail questions and require applicants to successfully complete this stage of the application process to progress to CAS. While this is an essential stage of the application/CAS process, please be assured the intention of the interview isn’t to catch anyone out. We are not expecting everyone to remember all of the facts and we have prepared guidance on our website which will be very useful for all applicants to read before undertaking the interview.

We are looking for applicants’ authentic answers and responding in a way that demonstrates their passion for study in the field or career progression in the area.

The interview links were emailed on the 2nd February which will ensure applicants receive feedback before our CAS launch around the 20th March.

    LIVING COSTS

Cheap location for living costs - they estimate £700 per month will cover basic living costs. Please see attached guide if the student needs to submit a portfolio for an art based course.

    DIRECT APPLICANTS

If you come across students who have already applied to USW and they then would like support from you, it’s important that you let Joanna know as soon as possible. She will then check whether the applicant has applied through another agent or directly. In cases where students have already applied through another agent the university does not allow switching of agents unless there are exceptional circumstances in which case further investigation would be needed.

Given the on-going issues with English language testing due to covid South Wales will be considering Duolingo as evidence of English ability for September 21 entry. The scores they will accept for courses requiring IELTS 6.0 will be: 100 overall, with 90 in each component. Please note that the overall scores shown above are indicative of the score required and achieving these does not guarantee acceptance. The whole test will be reviewed by the Centre for International English to provide a holistic assessment of your applicant’s English language proficiency and to determine if they are eligible for direct entry or if a pre-sessional is required. When taking Duolingo applicants need to nominate USW to receive the results in order for them to be confirmed. Once the results are available please email agents@southwales.ac.uk and copy Joanna in confirming the following information to enable the results to be verified: Name Student id Date of test South Wales will only consider Duolingo tests taken on or after 1st October 2020. Any student that used Duolingo for September 20 entry but deferred will have to submit a new Duolingo or alternative English test. Please can you let Joanna know in advance if any of your applicants will be taking a duolingo test (please let me know before they book the test).

Dear Colleagues, A reminder of the KIRA credibility interview below. We are only allowing students to sit the interview once so please ensure they are well prepared in the same way as they would prepare for a UKVI interview. Students should not pay a deposit until the University confirms they have passed the interview. This guidance provides some example questions to help students prepare. In particular, students are having difficulty with this question: -What facilities are you expecting at your chosen University? Possible talking points: 1. Course specific facilities – check your course pages 2. Student life It’s not enough to say that USW has accommodation, sports centre and a library – all universities have these facilities. Provide some details specific to USW – for example, what type of USW accommodation is the applicant interested in? Are there any USW course specific facilities that other universities don’t have? What support facilities are available at USW? What other facilities are available only at USW? All this information can be found by researching the links above. I hope this will help you support the applicant to ensure they successfully pass the interview the first time. Best Wishes Jo

Wales is leading the way and has now offered a first COVID-19 vaccination to every adult in Wales. The Welsh government has confirmed that all international students arriving this autumn will be eligible for vaccinations in line with the rest of the UK population and that there will be no charge for the vaccinations. We will share further details with you on how students will be able to access a vaccine later in the summer.

This is to confirm that we are no longer accepting applications for the September intake. Any applications received on or after 10th August will not be processed. The next important deadline is for the KIRA credibility interview to be completed by next Monday 23rd August. Students must be unconditional before they will be sent a link for a KIRA interview so all conditions must be sent to us as soon as possible. Please send conditions to agents@southwales.ac.uk and copy in me and india@southwales.ac.uk to avoid any delays dealing with your query. If students are only able to obtain provisional certificates due to the pandemic, please ask them to obtain a letter from their college/university confirming that they have completed the qualification. Important information about KIRA . The deadline to complete the KIRA interview is 23rd August. Links to complete the KIRA interview are sent to the applicant’s personal email - please check junk mail. Students should not pay a deposit until the University confirms they have passed the interview. The KIRA interview must be treated with the same importance as a UKVI credibility interview. Students will be expected to pass the interview so it’s important that they are well prepared Please ask students to refer to this guidance which gives examples of some questions they could be asked. Students are expected to do their own research so that they fully understand why they have chosen to study in the UK and at USW. Please ask students to be specific to USW when answering questions. For example, if asked about facilities at the University, it’s not enough to say that USW has accommodation, sports centre and a library – all universities have these facilities. Provide some details specific to USW – for example, what type of USW accommodation is the applicant interested in? Are there any USW course specific facilities that other universities don’t have? Students should be alone in the room and should not be disturbed for the duration of the interview*. If another person is in the room at any point during the interview, this will automatically result in a failed interview. Students should not take any notes into the interview no prompt cards or reference tools*. If students are found to be referring to notes, this will automatically result in a failed interview as the expectation is that the students will have researched the university thoroughly enough without the need to refer to notes. It is important to remember that we want the students own reasons as to why they have chosen the course and USW. We expect to see a clear demonstration of research and reasons as the UKVI will not accept scripted responses *as this would be the expectation for a UKVI interview I would suggest that you contact one of our current Indian students, Sri who is from Hyderabad. She can be contacted through our Unibuddy page https://www.southwales.ac.uk/chat-to-our-students/ as she is supporting students with their KIRA. The USW India Society are also supporting students with KIRA interviews so please get in contact with them on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/indiansocietyusw/ I hope this will help you support the applicant to ensure they successfully pass the interview the first time.

By the end of today we are aiming to be working to within a 15 working day turnaround time so please do not chase any applications that are within this turnaround time as this will unnecessarily add to our workload. Dear Colleagues, As mentioned on our website, students do not automatically meet our Duolingo requirements even if they achieve 100 overall with 90 in each component. The results will still need to be assessed by our English team and only then will we be able to confirm if the applicant has met our English requirements. English language requirements | University of South Wales Our English team cannot assess the results until the applicant has referred their results to us on their Duolingo dashboard. Many applicants are still not doing this and it’s causing significant delays. Going forward we will not be accepting any Duolingo results until you confirm that they have been referred to us on the student’s dashboard. Please send these confirmations to india@southwales.ac.uk along with the student’s details and then we will advise our English team that the results are ready to be assessed. If you have applications in the system where an applicant has completed Duolingo and you are waiting for an offer please double check that the applicant has referred their results to us and send a confirmation email to india@southwales.ac.uk

As you are aware, all students will need to pass a KIRA credibility interview before a deposit can be paid and a CAS issued. Students who are holding unconditional offers will be emailed a link to complete KIRA in March. In the meantime please support your students to ensure that they are fully prepared to pass the interview. The reason that we will be sending KIRA links in March is because we will not be in a position to issue CAS until May and we want the KIRA credibility interview to be fresh in the minds of students in case they are called for a UKVI credibility interview. Please find attached some guidance on the KIRA interview which I hope will support you to prepare students.

Dear Colleagues This email is to confirm that from tomorrow onwards we will be sending links for Credibility interviews (also known as a KIRA interview), to any students who are holding unconditional offers to study with us in September 2022. It may take a few days for all the links to be issued - please do not email us to issue KIRA links to individual applicants as all eligible students will receive them. The link will be sent to the student’s personal email address noted on their application. Please ask students to check junk mail and they will need to let you know when they have received the link so that you can ensure that they are fully prepared before they start the interview. The purpose of the KIRA is to ensure that students are fully prepared for a UKVI credibility interview. All USW applicants must pass a KIRA credibility interview before we are able to issue a CAS. Students should not pay a deposit until Admissions have confirmed that they have passed the KIRA interview. Students will only be given one chance to pass the interview due to the large volume of applications we are receiving. Please find attached some guidance on the KIRA interview which I hope will support you to prepare students. Please pay particular attention to the point about how students should prepare for a question about facilities - Mentioning generic university facilities will result in a failed KIRA interview. Further support for students I would suggest that you contact one of our Indian students, Arshi who is from Hyderabad (MBA Global) or Vinay from Chennai (BSc (Hons) Football Coaching and Performance). They can be contacted through our Unibuddy page https://www.southwales.ac.uk/chat-to-our-students/ as they are supporting students with their KIRA. The USW India Society are also supporting students with KIRA interviews so please get in contact with them on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/indiansocietyusw/
